Blayze Group was delighted to host the RTPI's first in a series of breakfast round table events for members in the North West.
The theme for this event was 'Retain your Talent - Recruit to Grow' and the focus was on staff retention and reducing costly attrition rates to promote business growth. These are issues that are becoming increasingly common across Planning and related markets and clearly struck a chord with the RTPI members.
Blayze Group is a specialist recruiting consultancy in the Property and Construction sectors working with clients to help attract and retain the best talent. In addition to a traditional recruiting service, Blayze Group also offers a range of Talent Management programmes including Competency Frameworks, Personality Tests, Leadership Programmes, Coaching and Mentoring - so it is well placed to help HR departments to identify and implement the key elements of a successful staff retention strategy.
Vicky Hughes, Head of Planning at Blayze Group and Laura Padgett, Associate Director at Blayze Group's Manchester office, highlighted the latest data on the primary reasons for people leaving organisations. While the compensation package is a factor in decisions to move on, many other reasons were cited - for example, poor management, lack of training and development, perceived lack of support, work/life balance and a lack of challenging work.
In today's competitive hiring environment, it is vital that organisations nurture and develop their top talent. These are the people who are key to the development and growth of the business and they will always have career options elsewhere.
In what was a lively and well-informed discussion, all the attendees made valuable contributions. It was clear that communication with employees is vital to a successful retention strategy. Having a deeper understanding of the trigger points for people leaving organisations provided food for thought on how to address these issues. Suggestions of catch up meetings with staff outside of the formal appraisal process, improved employee engagement and the clear visibility of career progression opportunities were all high on the list of many ways organisations can create an environment that improves attrition rates and helps build teams for business growth.
Thanks to the RTPI for organising the event and to Stockport Council, Trafford Council, IBI Group and Compedence for their support and attendance.
